Ettan Snus
Ettan has kept its original recipe of premium tobacco, salt and water since 1822. By making quality its number one priority, Ettan has been able to secure its position as one of Sweden’s top selling snus brands.
The recipe is deceptive in its simplicity, in that it has, in fact, revolutionized snus. When Jacob Fredrik Ljunglöf created Ettan, he developed a new production method for it, raising the quality of snus to a level that his competitors couldn’t match. What he did was change the tobacco from being fermented for up to six months, to being ground fresh. Jacob didn’t disclose this new processing method, writing the formula in a secret code that he had devised.
The name Ettan has a story of its own. It was common practice in the Swedish 19th century snus industry for each producer to have their assortments and brands include the quality designations No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. But Ljunglöf launched his new snus brand as simply 1:a (the Number One) making it the first nation-wide quality snus product.
Ljunglöf’s Ettan has come to define snus. Every pinch of Ettan has been formulated to taste the same as when it was first produced in 1822. The only change is the broadening of the range with the introduction of Ettan Original Portion in 1990 and Ettan White Portion in 2006.
Ettan – one of the most widely sold snus brands in Sweden – is still going strong after almost 200 years.
